What this assumes
Each row covers a full calendar year, starting with the year you entered. Enter your balance and contribution room as of January 1, before that year's contributions. Contribution room means the amount you can still contribute. Do not combine today's balance with a full year of future contributions. Future contribution limits and tax rates are assumptions, not confirmed future rules.
This example covers one child, with a $50,000 lifetime contribution limit across all their RESPs. Basic CESG pays 20% of eligible contributions, normally up to $500 a year or $1,000 when unused grant allowance is available. The lifetime limit is $7,200 for basic and additional CESG combined. Grants are added at year end.
This savings plan ends by the year the child turns 17. Grants at ages 16–17 require the contribution history described above. Additional CESG, the Canada Learning Bond and provincial grants are excluded. Enter contribution and grant history across all RESPs for the child.
The calculator does not include education withdrawals, repayment of grants or closing the plan. Contributions can normally be returned tax-free. Educational assistance payments from grants and investment earnings are taxable to the child, so the full balance is not tax-free income.
This example assumes you meet the account's eligibility and residency requirements; it does not confirm that you qualify. Check your eligibility, contribution room and account records before contributing. Your account balance does not tell you how much you can still contribute.
The calculator uses fixed yearly investment returns after fees. This is an example, not a forecast. Actual returns vary; losses, especially early in retirement, can greatly change the result. Amounts are in Canadian dollars and rounded for display.
These estimates are for learning and planning, not investment, insurance or tax advice. All amounts are in Canadian dollars. Results are rounded and are not guaranteed.
